In February of 2010 Millenia undertook the re-design of main customer floor areas at all NBD banking centers i.e. Hillsborough Street (Main Branch), Independent Street (ISB), Canefield and Portsmouth targeted at improving the appeal in their commercial centers and to portray a consistent dynamic image through these changes. New teller desks designed by Canadian firm EVANS were already lain out and Millenia was challenged to design the surrounding interiors to complement these desks. Our design strategy focused on the use of elements which would create a unified theme in the different branches.
The introduction of a ‘Brand wall’ (wall surface occupied exclusively by the company logo) at all branches was the first step towards the new NBD image. The use of the bank’s brightest colors adds a young and dynamic appeal and represents the new approach. Floor and ceiling cues help define spaces.
Rectangular shaped tiles used in high-traffic areas, while smaller, wood-like tiles are used in “dwell zones,” such as the lounge. The addition of curved ceilings enhances the space delimitation without the need of physical separation and helps soften the stiff experience most consumers expect from financial institutions. Carpeted floor was selected for the employee area to increase their comfort and by extension the service to the customer. Visual merchandising on the retail floor exposes customers to NBD’s offered services.
Wall lettering, Community Support display, LCD screen, brochure holders, wall mounted acrylic displays are some of the branches marketing features to create a more modern, high-tech impression. At Hillsborough Street a multi-dimensional display with sheets of acrylic in the brand’s colors layered over a white acrylic backlit shell houses two touch screen kiosks and incorporates a fresh, new brand identity into the branch.
